59 Green Light

主義としてあまり私事は書かないことにしているのですが、貴重な経験だったので、少しばかり。

網膜にちょっとした変性が見つかり、治療のため左眼にレーザー手術を受けました。レーザーで網膜を照射してシーリングする（はがれてこないように押さえる）というものです。明りを落とした治療室の中、手術の間自分に見えるのはこの写真のようなグリーンの閃光だけでした。レーザーを照射するたびにグリーンの光が瞬き、なんとなく後頭部に刺さるような鈍い痛みがあります（灼熱感、という人もいるそうです）。でも痛みよりも、真っ暗な中でじっと動かずにこの光を見つめる体験が、何ともいえずシュールな感覚で、面白かったといえばいい過ぎですが、不思議な感じでした。

医療の進歩ってまったく素晴らしいものがあります。目にレーザー光線をあてて治療しようなんて、一体誰が最初に思いついたんでしょうか。

58 Paper Bag

スターバックスで渡されるおなじみの紙袋、資源ごみに分けようとして、ふと見てみたらこんなことが書いてありました。

You're holding something special.
A tasty treat. A thoughtful gift.
All inside a handy carrier.
Which becomes a lunch bag. A puppet.
A keep-it-new book cover.
A garden tool holder.
A "bring a few CDs over for dinner" carrier.
Unwrapped, it's a sketch pad. With handles.
So reuse it. Reincarnate it. Re-imagine it.
And when it's served its every purpose, recycle it.

あなたが持っているのは特別なもの。
おいしいもの。温かい贈り物。
どれも便利な袋に入っている。
その袋はランチバッグになる。指人形になる。
ブックカバーになる。
庭仕事の道具入れになる。
ディナーでかけるCDを入れておく。
広げれば、スケッチ用の紙になる。手提げのついた。
だから、もう一度使う。もう一度形を与える。もう一度想像してみる。
どんなことでも、何かの役に立つのなら、リサイクルする。

資源ごみに入れるようでは、まだ想像力が足りないわけですね。

ここまでいわれたら、どうしようかなと考えています。たしかにスケッチ用の紙はいいアイディアです。白いチョークや色鉛筆なんかが合いそうです。

57 Unplugged

All my life I've been addicted to music. I listen to music everyday, everytime, outdoor or indoor, from dawn to midnight (sometimes all night), every single moment I'm holding music with me and it makes me happy more than anything.

That's exactly "no music no life." It's oh so fun but, it's an obsession, at least not so healthy.

Somehow I am beginning to learn that I can enjoy sound around me other than music. One enlightning idea came from Starwars movie commentary. It was about creation and designing sound. How did they creat R2-D2 beep and lightsaber blast? The fact is these sound were all around there; animal's growl, baby voice, electric wire, circuit car, or trash can. World may be lack of nice music but full of sound. If you're always plugged in to iPod, you never notice pleasure of these real sound.

Another hint was my favorite Jacques Tati. Tati created the sound effect with perfectionism and sense of humor. His film is always full of unique and humorous sound. Bang, clash, bump, splash, footsteps, dog barking, bell ringing, motor running...every single sound is cautioulsy created and combined with each other. How did he develop these sensitivity?

So recently I started to catch the various sounds in outside world without music. Not only I do catch the interesting unexpected sound but soon I notice that my hearing sense does catch the distance and the speed which eyes cannot catch when backward. Distance and speed leads perception in 3-dimensions. Oh, the sight is 2-dimensions, I guess. (That's why they make "3-d movie", don't they?)

Hearing can help and ease eyes. If I always, always listen to music, I'm killing one or two of my 5 senses.

Well I start to play my iPod when in train or subway, where every sound heard is not at all charming!!

56 Take Care

As an investment banker, I usually work late and work hard too much. Last April was terrible because I never left office before midnight.

Everyone says to me "Take care of your health" and I think I should. But practically how do I? How can I take care of myself when I have to work 16 hours a day? (Note: financial people are not the exceptional. Some of my friends are doctors who work 20 hours a day and have almost no holidays.)

"Take care" is not diffficult but it's a matter of priotrity, I guess.

Before I check today's Sartorialist post,
Before I listen to the radio talk,
Before I send reply mails to friends,
Before I enjoy red-carpet fashion reviews,
Before I start to write this blog,

I should just rest.
I should rest from top to toe before any activities my minds wants, and not my body. If you take care of yourself, it's not something you just wait for an aid. It needs intentional action towards your physical condition. It means to give your body the priority...that's what I thought.

But when I told my idea to a lady she said "but mind works together with body. So if minds wants something, just do it. It is as important to your whole health as resting your body."

This is true. So, maybe the best, happiest thing is, "what mind wants is the same with what body wants."

55 The Shoulder of Giants

"Standing on the Shoulder of Giants"...Oasisの4thアルバムというより、Issac　Newtonの言葉として有名ですが、お気に入りの言葉の一つ。謙虚さの中の真実という感じがします。UKロックでも天文学でも、料理でもバスケットボールでも、科学でも文学でも映画でも園芸でも、天気予報でもヨガのレッスンでも、配水管工事でも調香でも、風邪を治すのも犬を飼うのも、ほとんど、つねに、すべてのことに通じる真実ではないでしょうか？

豪放で楽しい1stから3rdまでの作品と異なるトーンを出したOasisの4作目当時、ライヴを観に行きました。巨大なアリーナで淡々と歌い続けたLiam Gallagher、そして演奏を終えステージに一人残ったNoel Gallagherが、まるで余韻を断ち切るように音を止め、さっさと立ち去っていったのが何故かとてもクールでした。

54 Kings of Convenience

"ノルウェーのSimon&Garfunkle”と言われるKings of Convenience。
アコースティックサウンド＋穏やかなハーモニーというスタイルは確かによく似ています。最近聴き始めたばかりですが、ノルウェーという土地柄なのか、UKやUSのメインストリームの音楽性とはかなり違うのです。

音楽を作るというより、音楽を奏でている。作曲するというより、風景や周りの世界に漂う雰囲気をさらさらと音で表現している。

音だけ聴くとスピリチュアルともいうべき心地よさが際立つ一方、ライブレポートや楽曲ビデオを観ると、これがなかなかお笑い系らしいので愉快です。

詩的で緻密な空気と、衒いのない音楽性と、ギャグめいた心を持つあたり、マンチェスターのBadly Drawn Boyを思い出します。スタイルは違うのですが。

53 Creator and Client

建築とファッションの類似

といっても、一時期はやった表象的文化人類学的な意味ではなくて、もっと単純な話です。

建築科の大学生がこんなことを言っていました。
「ある建築ができあがると、建築家は自分がこれを作ったといい、設計士は自分がこれを作ったといい、建築施工技師は自分がこれを作ったといい、大工や左官も自分がこれを作ったといい、顧客も自分がこれを作ったといい、そこにディベロッパーがいるなら、ディベロッパーも自分がこれを作ったという」

要するにかかわった人たち全員が、自分の作り上げたものだと主張したいのだそうです。

さてファッションは？
デザイナーは自分がこれを作ったというでしょう。
パタンナーも自分がこれを作ったというでしょう。
生地をカットし縫ったり合わせる人も自分がこれを作ったというでしょう。
生地を織ったり編んだりして作る人…は、そこまでいわないと思いますが、Haute Coutureの作品でそのためだけに特別な生地が必要になったなら、そういってもいいと思います。
注文した顧客も、自分が作ったとはいわないまでも、自分が誂えた、といういいかたはできます。

これまた、かかわった人たち全員が、自分が作り上げたと主張してもよさそうな気がします。

ただしかかわる人たちが多いけれど多すぎないのがポイントです。
もし建築デザインとファッションデザインがこうした点で似ているとしても、グラフィックデザイン、インダストリアルデザイン、音響デザイン、都市計画で同じことがは起きないでしょう。違うのは、こちらはかかわる人たちが大変多いというか、不特定多数の人たちを対象にしていたり、形のないものをデザインしているため。

Le Corbusier（写真中央）なら、誰が建築を作るのかという問いには「機能と美学がこれを導く」とでも答えたでしょうか。偉大なモダニズム建築家で、作家性も自我も強い巨匠であったと思いますが、なぜか「自分がつくった」とは答えない気がします。

52 Stupid

I saw this in DIESEL shop window. It's interesting very much. This is itself smart remark and in a way philosphical. Don't we always have Answers after Questions, do we? Answers exists because there are questions. If there is no question, answers neither. But on the other hands Answer and Truth are different. Truth exists even if there is no question.

However, there is no absolute truth. (Remember, hundreds of years ago people believe that the sun turns around the earth. It was the truth.)

So if I add some stupid words to this, SMART MAY SEE THE TRUTH BUT STUPID HAS ALL THE ALTERNATIVE TRUTH THAT MAY POSSIBLY BECOME THE TRUTH.

51 Adele

久しぶりのリュック・ベッソン監督、相変わらずの冒険映画、Adeleが夏に公開されます。大人になっても、またLeonやFifth Elementのように、楽しめるのかどうか。

映画の出来は観てみないとわかりませんが、10年やそこらで人間は変わりません。楽しめるからこそ、今から気になって仕方がないのです。この写真を見ただけで。

帽子と衣装は非常にクラシックでロマンチックですが、よく見れば羽織っている細身のカーキ色のコートは随分とシンプルでミリタリー風です。しかも学校をサボってきた子供のようにポケットに手を突っ込み、ぐっと顎を引いた反抗的でシニカルな表情。この態度がまさにリュック・ベッソン的主人公。

Fifth Elementはファンタスティックでおしゃれながらもいささか騒々しく、Leonは私にとってはfilm noirともいうべき一種の風格を備えていましたが、ちょっと物悲しい。

そこへ行くとAdeleは大の大人がエジプトで冒険するお話。少しだけ時代は違いますが、ジュール・ヴェルヌの「八十日間世界一周」で冒険を繰り広げる寡黙な紳士、フィリアス・フォッグ氏を連想させる、紳士淑女の冒険譚という感じがするのです。

全然違ったりして。

オチは宇宙人だったりして。

恐竜は出るらしいですが、恐竜は実在していたので、よしとしましょう。

50 Sartorialist in Japan

Mr. Scott Schuman has visited Japan this April for the first time in his life, which is surprising because to me Tokyo seemed to be such a sanctuary to any fashion journalists.

He took great street fashion photos as usual. No, maybe...I don't know, but there's difference in his photo in Japan from those in NY, Paris, or Milan. I've been always enjoying the people's atmosphere in Scott's shooting. Whoever the people are, either the fashion celebrity or students, mother and child, oridinary ladies and gentlemen, their appearances are in a way the same; free & easy, relaxed, and also independent.

I do like one or two of his photo in Tokyo, especially a girl with aviator suglasses and two men in kimono.

But I cannot help feel something is different here. Tokyo's fashionista seemed to be tensed, or less relaxed than people in NY street. That's just because Scott is a foreigner? No I don't think so. I'm sure the beautiful people knew him who is an icon in fashion industry. Also he is a genius to make people relaxed and mind-free.

It's all my feelings and I don't know if it's true, but street fashionista in world's cities seems much more open-minded and unconscious for their clothings or chic stylings. That makes them just enjoy their time to talk with Scott and to be an target of his camera.

Anyway his first shooting in Tokyo was not the human but the popular blue drink; POCARI SWEAT and that's really funny.

49 Why toxic?

ナマケモノの赤ちゃん。
春の連休はこんな感じで。

目をつぶっている写真の方がかわいいようです。目を開いているとグレムリンになる前のギズモに少しばかり似ています。

スズランについて書きましたが、自然科学の知識はなくても、検索すれば「スズランは有毒です」という情報を得られます。根も花も草も、致死性の毒を持っているとか。動物に食べられるのを防ぐためとか。

しかしなぜ？
その答えは見つかりませんでした。

でも、自然界にはおそらくほとんどのことに理由があると思っています。理由というより因果関係でしょうか。スズランが毒を持っているなら、その因果関係が何かある。どこかで蝶が飛びたつとどこかで津波が起こる（風が吹けば桶屋が、のグローバルバージョン）という言いまわしを聞いたことがありますが、そういうことがきっとある。

ナマケモノは、一日に8グラムの植物を食べながら木の上で生涯を過ごすとのこと。それならナマケモノ一匹の植物摂取が生態系のバランスを整えている一因になっているはずなのです。
自然界がちょっと違ったものだったなら、もしかするとナマケモノが有毒動物だったり、スズランが毎日8グラム他の植物を食べるのかもしれません。

これがたぶん、Science Fictionの面白さ。

48 Tativille, and Lilly of the Valley

French friends propably do know it best; "Jour de muguet", 1st May.

フランスでは5月1日に親しい相手にスズランを贈り、相手の幸せを願うそうです。

Muguet, or Lilly of the Valley, has something to do with me. To me it's special because it is the signature flower of my hometown.

So yesterday I watched the little flower and enjoyed the beautiful scent. Suddenly a funny memory came up. Have you ever seen "The Muguet Street Lamp"? It is in the film "Playtime", by Jacques Tati.

ジャック・タチの「プレイタイム」は面白い、と（生意気にも）言えるようになりたくて、ずいぶん子供の頃に観てみました。面白いのです、きっと。しかしこれは、一風変わったどころではないユーモアのセンスに満ちた、まるで詩を映像にしたような、ストーリーがあるのかないのか分からない、時間の感覚もよく分からない非常に手の込んだ、しかも長い長い喜劇の一篇。映画史に残るアーティスティックな傑作であることは疑いないのですが、とにかく眠い。

Please don't take it wrong! I love Jacques Tati and his films. The famous "Mon Oncle" is one of my all time favorites. Even though my knowledge about cinema is limited, I do think he was a genius. However, you cannot just sit and watch to enjoy Playtime as an easy comedy. That's because it is too sophisticated, or too elaborated, or just too long, I don't know. What I say is it's fantastic and beyond imagination.

しかし眠い。

ストーリーは、おそらくこんな感じです。ウルトラモダンで機能的な街、いつものユロ伯父さんがふらりと現れ、戸惑い歩き、あちこち壊し、騒ぎを巻き起こしながら、何が何だか酔狂な一夜を過ごします。その中に美人のアメリカ人観光客がいます。彼女もまたてんやわんやの中にいながらクールに街を眺め、翌朝、バスに乗って去っていきます。

At last I was awakened by the lovely shot. The Muguet Street Lamp.

スズランの形をした街灯。それを見て美人のアメリカ人は微笑み、バスが去っていくというシーンだった気がします。

長い長い難解なユーモア攻撃のあと、そんなシーンがあれば見ているほうも一気に目が覚めてにっこりせざるを得ないじゃないですか。

So, this little flower motif could make us happy.

ジャック・タチが、幸せを願う花スズランを、意図的にこのモダン都市に投入したのかどうか、わかりませんが。何しろフランス映画ですから。でもフランス映画なので。
